Our Path to Fitness: The Adventure Nears

Rachel and I have decided to move our hike forward as the weather is supposed to be perfect next weekend; clear but not too hot. Originally we had thought that getting back into shape would take a lot longer, but with the right equipment we've been able to surpass our expectations.

At first I started getting back into running simply to run and get some exercise in, but as I've remember the enjoyment I find in pushing myself physically, I've discovered how much I like using the conditioning programs that come with the TR 6.6 treadmill. And being able to easily monitor my speed and pulse and other factors of my workout allows me to set goals and watch myself break them.

As Rachel has steadily gotten back into shape, she too has been raising her fitness ambitions. In her early college years before life started to get too busy, she used to do a lot of rock and mountain climbing. Recently she has been pushing herself to use the higher levels of incline offered by her FS 5.4 elliptical (of which there are 20, and that's a lot of range), and Rachel has begun talking about getting back into climbing. It sounds great to me. I did a little bit of it when I was younger too, and I remember how amazing everything looks when you're at the peak of a mountain.

Our Path to Fitness: Enjoying the Adventure

Rachel and I are now eight weeks into training, and I speak for both of us when I say that we feel like we're ahead of our fitness goals. I think we're both more than prepared for our hike now, which is one month away.

I've been running for years, but I've never really used a treadmill. The great outdoors has always been my training ground, but the machine's soft, cushioned deck gives the impression that I'm running along a dirt path. And I've found the benefit in my TR 6.6's workout programs. I can feel how they're pushing me to workout new muscles and at rhythms that are entirely new to me. I feel like they provide just the right challenge I need during training to make sure that I'm at my best once I'm out in the real world.

She didn't know if it would be possible, but Rachel has lost all of the weight she had put on over the course of the pregnancy, a triumph that is much discussed among her friends. Her sister has had two kids, and she says that after each one she did about a million crunches, but could never quite get back to her old shape. I think that Rachel has had so much success thanks to the fact that her FS 5.4 provides a full body workout. It's biomechanically correct stride also delivers a maximum level of effectiveness with each step. There isn't an inch of her body that hasn't toned considerably since having the baby and getting back into a fitness routine.

Our Path to Fitness: Starting the Journey

It's been six weeks since Rachel and I got a TR 6.6 treadmill and an FS5.4 elliptical, and I can happily report that we've both made leaps and bounds toward being prepared for our big hike with little Jake.
For the first few weeks, I focused primarily on getting my stamina back up by going the slow and steady route and keeping my pace limited to a good jog. As my legs increasingly got used to working out again (the extra soft, cushioned deck was a HUGE help in that capacity—my joints needed a gentle way of getting back into the workout groove), I was excited to begin pushing myself to faster and faster speeds. I've also started using the incline more frequently and at higher degrees, and I'm really getting excited to get outdoors again and get up the mountain.

Suffice to say that Rachel has fallen in love with her elliptical. She didn't talk too much about it at the time, but I think that right after Jake was born she was a little worried about how her body looked and whether or not she would be able to lose the weight she had gained during the pregnancy. But that hasn't been an issue at all. She started out at a slow pace, but it was kind of amazing to see her progress as quickly as she did as the weeks went by. The machine's specially tilted pedals and biomechanically correct stride ensures that she can workout comfortably for as long as her stamina holds up, so once she gets going nothing is holding back her momentum.
