4 Ways to Help Prevent Heart Disease

Feb 6, 2019

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. In honor of American Heart Month XTERRA Fitness hopes to spread the word about heart disease and offer insight on how to live a healthier heart life. Here are 4 ways you can change your lifestyle to help prevent heart disease.

  1. Lower salt intake. Eating too much salt can cause extra water to be stored in your body, raising blood pressure and putting strain on your heart. Lower your salt intake by adding flavor to your dishes with spices like basil, cinnamon, cumin or cayenne.

  2. Aerobic exercise. Cardiologists recommend a minimum of 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day. Aerobic (or cardio) exercises increase the heart rate and breathing rate to levels that can be sustained for the duration of the exercise. This promotes a healthy heart and has been shown to reduce the chance of developing heart disease. Examples of aerobic exercises are cardio machines, spinning, running, swimming, and rowing. 3. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Eating a healthier more balanced diet will help you lose excess weight and lower your blood pressure. Studies have found that fruits and vegetables also help your body regulate the negative effects of sodium improving your heart health.

  4. Limit unnecessary stress. Being overly stressed can cause your blood pressure to be raised. If this happens often it can have a negative impact on your heart health. Find strategies for lowering unnecessary stress naturally. Exercise, yoga, meditation and healthy diet are ways that increase endorphins and encourage a centered and happier outlook.
