Recovery Tips: How to Recover Faster After a Tough Summer Workout
Jun 19, 2023Summer workouts can be intense with high temperatures and challenging interval or strength training sessions. To get the most out of your workouts and avoid burnout, proper recovery is essential. Here are some tips to help your body recover faster after a tough workout:
Hydrate
Sweating heavily during summer workouts means you lose a lot of water. Replenishing fluids is the first step to recovery. Aim to drink 16-20 ounces of water right after your workout. For every pound of weight lost during your workout, drink an additional 16-24 ounces. Electrolytes can also help with rehydration and replenishing minerals lost in sweat.
Eat a Recovery Meal
Within 45 minutes of finishing your workout, eat a mix of protein and carbs. Protein helps repair and rebuild muscle while carbs replenish depleted energy stores. Some great options include a protein smoothie with fruit, a turkey sandwich on whole grain bread, or Greek yogurt with granola.
Cool down
Take time to cool down gradually after your workout. This helps your heart rate and breathing return to normal and removes lactic acid buildup from your muscles. Light cardio like walking or cycling along with stretching is ideal. If it's very hot out, head indoors to cool down in air conditioning when possible.
Rest
Adequate rest is essential for recovery and fitness gains. Most experts recommend 7-9 hours of sleep per night for exercise recovery. Lack of sleep can increase cortisol levels, decrease protein synthesis, and make you more prone to fatigue and injury. Try to maintain a regular sleep schedule, even on weekends or vacations.
Take a rest day
If you've had several tough workouts in a row or are feeling overly fatigued, take a complete rest day with no exercise. This allows your body to fully recover and helps prevent burnout. Use your rest day to engage in low-key activities like light walking, stretching, or yoga. Getting extra sleep, eating healthy foods, and minimizing stress will also help you get the most out of your rest day.
